Many factors can cause a slow internet connection at home. One common cause usually comes from internet network service providers. But, there are also other causes that people are quite unaware of.
If you use a wireless router in your home to spread the internet network, a wireless router that is used could be one of the causes of slowing down the internet connection. This is because you may have been a victim of theft of internet access by irresponsible parties.
For this reason, a wireless router security system is needed. To do prevention, it turns out the way is quite easy.
1. Enter the router admin panel
To check the initial steps that must be done is to go to the router's admin panel.
What is commonly done is type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 in the browser's address bar. If this does not work, to manually check the router's admin panel IP address by clicking the start button in the lower left corner of the screen, in the search field then type CMD then type ipconfig.
After that, a network connection information display will appear. In the last line "Default Gateway" is the IP address of the router's admin panel. Then, type the IP address in the browser's address bar for access to the router's admin panel.
2. Check MAC Address
After you enter the router's admin panel, the next step is to identify the device that is connected to the WiFi router.
Every device that is connected to WiFi, the device's MAC Address information will definitely appear in the router's admin panel. Admin panel display for each router brand will certainly be different. But, in general the order of MAC Address information can be seen in the Wireless Configuration, Wireless Status, or in the DHCP client.
This is where you can see what devices are connected to WiFi and identify. You can count the number of devices connected to the WiFi router. Like for example, there are only 4 devices connected to WiFi in total, but there are 5 devices on the display, meaning that there is a possibility of an intruder stealing your internet network connection.
3. Stop Immediately
To stop this WiFi theft, you must tighten the wireless router access. The scenario can be different.
If the wireless router has not been installed, immediately install the password on your wireless router. And, if the wireless router is passworded but still uses the factory default password, you are strongly advised to change the password.
The trick, in the admin panel of this wireless router go to the security settings section. In general, changing or adding a password can also be found in the PSK or Pre Shared Key section.
Changing the password on the wireless router will automatically disconnect all devices connected to the wireless router. So, your device at home must be connected back to the wireless router with a new password in order to be able to reconnect to the internet.
To be more secure, how to change the password is enough we suggest that it can be done periodically. You can also change the name of the wireless router hotspot which can generally be accessed via the menu in the Service Set Identifier (SSID).
For those of you who don't want to bother doing all the steps above, there is no harm in investing in a wireless router device that has a high security system. Wireless routers that use the WPA2 encryption system can be one of the more practical solutions.
In addition to being able to anticipate WiFi theft, the tips we provide can also prevent you from a variety of other cyber crime that utilizes your internet network connection such as data theft, spreading viruses or even taking other illegal actions. In the end, the security problem on the wifi router still requires users to be more proactive and aware of the dangers of cyber crime that can attack at any time. Good luck!
